Work on Google Drive files offline on Chromebook

If you know you'll be offline but you want to work on Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides, you can make Google Drive files available offline.

1. Make Google Drive available offline

  1. Connect to the Internet.

  2. Open the Google Docs Offline extension.

  3. Click Add to Chrome. (If the button says "Added to Chrome," you’ve already installed the extension.)

  4. Go to drive.google.com/drive/settings.

  5. In the "Offline" area, check the box. It might take a few minutes for the offline access setting to turn on.

Your Chromebook saves your most recently opened documents so you can work on them offline.

2. Work on a file offline

When your Chromebook isn’t connected to the Internet:

  1. Click the Launcher All Apps.

  2. Click Google Drive .

  3. Find the file you’d like to work on, and double-click it to open.

  4. Work on your file. Any changes will sync to Google Drive the next time your Chromebook connects to the Internet.

Make files available

When you make Google Drive available offline, only your most recent files will be automatically saved offline. To manually choose files to save for offline use:

  1. Follow Step 1 above to make Google Drive available offline.

  2. Click the Launcher All Apps.

  3. Click Google Docs , Google Sheets , or Google Slides .

  4. On the file you want to use offline, click More .

  5. Click Available offline. A check mark will appear in the bottom left corner to show that the file is available offline.

Stop seeing files offline

To free up hard drive space, you can delete the offline versions of your files:

  1. Go to drive.google.com/drive/settings.

  2. In the "Offline" area, uncheck the box.

You’ll still see your files in Google Drive when you’re connected to the Internet.

For Students TK - 6th

Chromebooks are issued in groups on protective charging carts to teachers making it their responsibility to troubleshoot problems and seek help when issues arise.

  1. If a student has a Chromebook issue and brings it to your attention, try troubleshooting to resolve the issue or narrow down the problem.

    1. Is it a username/password issue?

    2. Is the Chromebook connected to the wifi?

    3. Webpage Issues

      1. Fix "Aw, Snap!" page crashes

      2. "This webpage is not available"

      3. "The following plug-in has crashed"

    4. Hardware Issues

      1. Touchpad isn't responding

      2. Keyboard isn't working

      3. Battery won't charge

        1. Make sure that your charger or adapter cables are securely connected to your Chromebook.

        2. Make sure that the power outlet is working. If not, plug your Chromebook into a working power outlet

        3. Unplug your charger from the wall and your Chromebook, then plug it back in.

        4. Charge the device for at least 30 minutes.

    5. System Issues

      1. Chromebook is slow

      2. Chromebook crashes or freezes

        1. Turn off your Chromebook, then turn it back on.

        2. Close all your apps and browser windows.

        3. If a specific tab in your browser causes your Chromebook to crash or freeze, hard refresh the page: Ctrl + Shift + R.

        4. Reset your Chromebook.

      3. Chromebook won't turn on

        1. Make sure that your charger or adapter cables are securely connected to your Chromebook.

        2. Make sure that the power outlet is working. If not, plug your Chromebook into a working power outlet.

        3. Unplug your charger from the wall and your Chromebook, then plug it back in.

        4. Charge the device for at least 30 minutes.

        5. If these steps don't fix the problem, reset your Chromebook.

        6. If resetting your Chromebook doesn't work, contact IT with a service request ticket for more help.

  2. If troubleshooting does not resolve the issue, please put in a service request ticket with the IT Department to assist.

    1. Make sure to mention what room number you are in, your updated phone extension, and what cart number the Chromebook came from.

For Students 7th-12th

Chromebooks are issued individually to students making it their responsibility to troubleshoot problems and seek help when issues arise.

  1. Try using the troubleshooting steps above first to narrow down or resolve the issue.

  2. If the problem persists, send the student to the McCandless Library for assistance during their breaks. Remind students they can also go before school or after school if they do not want to go during their breaks. Do not send them during class time.
